Saving $$$ with Spirit Airlines | Motherhood Unplugged

Our family recently traveled to Riviera Maya on Spirit airlines for the first time. Prior to flying with Spirit, I had heard mixed reviews mainly surrounding the additional fees incurred although the flight ticketing prices are much less expensive than their competitors. I decided to do my due diligence and research how we could save the most as a family of 4 prior to boarding their aircraft. Of course, when searching for the proper bag requirements I knew our current roller bags would be too large so I went to my trusty Amazon prime account to buy a new travel bag. I came across the "Make your Travel Life Easy + Fun" totes and thought they were so adorable. I originally wanted the orange color but unfortunately they were sold out and would not arrive in time for our trip so I went with charcoal grey which worked out perfectly.

This Narwey bag can be purchased here on Amazon. We save a ton of money by buying the appropriate sized luggage to fit underneath the seats as well as pre-booking our seats together rather than waiting to do so at the airport. One thing I did not know to do was wait to buy our tickets at the airport rather than prior to as I've done so many times in the past. I've always thought that buying ahead of time on discount sites saves money but with Spirit you can save at the counter as well. You won't get the cheapest price if you are checking a bag when purchasing your ticket at a counter so keep this in mind but if you are like us less 'stuff' is all you need. Another way to save is to check in online because Spirit charges you $10 per person at the counter. Avoid the fee by downloading the Spirit app, check in online and pre-print your boarding pass, or check in online and have it emailed to your phone which can be scanned at the TSA check point.

When traveling with children I always have to be prepared when it comes to food and snacks. On Spirit airlines you will pay out of pocket for any food so preplan ahead of time to purchase your snacks before boarding and save those coins for a meal that you really want when you get to your destination.

Traveling to Mexico on Spirit was a pleasant experience for my family and saving money doing the aforementioned things helped us a family of 4 to spend those dollars in more memorable ways. Have you also been able to save with Spirit airlines? Where are you flying with them next?
