We traveled to San Diego in January for a winter getaway with Phoenix. This particular trip was a tricky one because Atlanta was hit with an ice storm that virtually made it impossible to travel anywhere on the streets. Luckily for us we lived in Buckhead at the time and decided to walk up the icy hill to the Marta station, which was still running. I was in my first trimester with Cairo at the time but thankfully energetic enough to make the trek. As an avid traveler I was not ready to throw in the towel, pregnant in an ice storm or not! lol The 4 hour plane ride with a baby was the longest trip we've taken at that point but Phoenix has always been a trouper. I made sure to nurse him during take off and landing to alleviate any pressure in his ears. He also sleeps very well in the car and on airplanes so that wasn't a problem for us either.

Upon arrival in San Diego we headed to Enterprise to pick up our car seat and rental car. I had only been to California once before for a work trip to Orange county so I expected similar scenery but San Diego was more mountainous. The Lakehouse hotel is tucked away near a residential community with a beautiful lake and mountains set behind it. It was very close to the Safari park which we visited and I loved. My husband even took Phoenix to a local park to play while I dealt with some pregnancy aches back at the hotel. You can tell from the picture above I am laying in bed while he plays looking out the balcony window. Being pregnant with a toddler can take a toll on your body especially when you have to exert extra energy while traveling. The first night we just rested and ate dinner.

The following day we went to the San Diego Safari park located close to our hotel. I believe this was the most expensive thing we did in San Diego as we also drove to the pier for lunch and walked around. I loved this safari park in comparison to the other zoo's I've been to in my life. It was more like being in an actual safari, as close as I will get to one until I make it to Africa. I particularly liked the fact that the gates or viewing walls were lower than normal on some exhibits so that children could peak over them. We rode on the safari tram to see the 'wild' animals and Phoenix got to hear some of the lions roaring. It actually sounded like it was right near by although it wasn't, very scary and very cool indeed.

Have you been to the San Diego Safari park? I'd love to hear what else you enjoyed there. If we ever go back to San Diego as a family I would like to return so Cairo can experience this place.
