When you become pregnant people automatically shower you with 'be careful', 'you shouldn't work out', 'you shouldn't eat that', and 'you shouldn't travel.' Whether you are traveling by car, bus, train or airplane it is generally safe to travel whilst pregnant. However, some things can be taken into consideration to make your trip much safer and easier on your growing baby. Always wear a seat belt over the shoulder and across your lap. Keep your airbags turned on in your vehicle. Stay seated when on modes of transportation that tend to jerk or come to a sudden stop. Try to keep your travel time limited to under 6 hours and in that time be sure to drink fluids and walk to prevent clotting.
Most airlines will allow pregnant women to travel up to their 8 month mark. Traveling during your 9th month can be allowed as long as there is documentation provided by a physician. I am pictured about at 5 months for my first baby moon in Mexico at the GR Solaris. When traveling on the plane you may wish to book an aisle seat to give you easier access to the restroom or ability to walk around. Book travel to places on airlines with pressurized cabins and avoid traveling on smaller aircrafts. If you are considered high risk definitely check with your provider prior to booking your trip. When booking travel overseas discuss any immunizations or health risk factors associated with that region.
A few tips to make your trip more comfortable are to dress comfortably, drink plenty of fluids, carry your snacks along, bring a pillow, stretch your back and take walks to alleviate any discomfort. Most of all enjoy your pregnancy and the ability to travel the world with baby in tow.
