Chichen Itza Maya Ruins | Sacred Cenote | Mexico | Motherhood Unplugged

One of the first baecations we ever took was to Mexico, back in 2010. We had just started dating and I thought it would be nice if I, the woman, actually took him on a vacation for a change so I did just that. We flew to Cancun and stayed at the GR Solaris, which would become one our favorite hotels simply because of their pristine beach front location. I'm sure things have been upgraded and management might have even changed but it was a great place to stay then and I'm sure it still is now. During our stay at the GR Solaris, an all inclusive resort, we lounged on the beach, sat in the hot tub, ate all we could and drank even more. Ahhh those were the days....

We also decided to go on an excursion during our trip to see the Chichen Itza Mayan ruins. We paid for our tour onsite at the hotel and boarded a bus along with about 20 others. The trip was definitely worth it and I would for sure go again with the kids a second time around. One of the best parts about the trip was seeing the ruins upclose and in person. Witnessing such a great feat in person was an amazing and mind-blowing experience, just to think that this was built with human hands. Chichen-Itza, now including one of the new 7 wonders of the world; the Kukulkan Pyramid, is located in the Peninsula of Yucatan, in the Yucatan State; Mexico, between Valladolid and Merida and is just120 km from Merida.

Simply being at a historical site like that of Chichen Itza takes you back in time to when the Mayans built such phenomenal structures and makes you think about your life in a new perspective. Another stop along the tour was at the Ik Kil, the Sacred Cenote, a freshwater swimming hole surrounded by vertical rocks and hanging vines. This is a very popular tourist spot to visit as you can see. I actually had a major migraine on this trip so I did not swim but my husband took a dip. Another 1st for me on this tour as tasting THE BEST CHICKEN EVER in life. OMG this chicken was so fresh and unlike any meat I'd ever had before, even better than the grassfed free range birds sold at the healthy supermarkets. So Bomb! We also were entertained by some dancers during our meal who were also amazing.

I absolutely adore Mexico, its culture and especially the people. I've visited this country many times and have always felt safe and welcomed. Now that we are traveling as a family I would love to tackle the remaining 6 wonders of the world. Back in 2007, over 1 hundred million voters went online to vote for the new official wonders of the world. If you're wondering what they are, sign up for our email list to check out the next post and never miss an update.

Have you been to visit this historical site? Are you too on a quest to visit all of the 7 wonders of the world? Let us know how we can follow along.

Happy Travels!
