Backyard Campout at SwiftCantrell | Motherhood Unplugged

I had the opportunity to go camping as child while on a road trip to Florida. We stopped at a campground in Georgia where we pitched a tent and stayed overnight in the woods. It wasn't the type of experience you would have being out in the wilderness but I still enjoyed it nonetheless and remember it to this day. I've been wanting to give my kids the experience of camping outdoors. I have quite an adventurous spirit but my husband always airs on the side of caution and says things like, what if we get attacked by a bear? I'm never going to purposely put my children in danger but c'mon live a little! I even told him we could compromise by pitching a tent in the backyard but to that he says ya'll can sleep out there I'll be in the house sigh + rolls eyes. I always tell him a joke from the movie "Failure to Launch," about having chipmunk cream if he should get bitten while being in the woods :) Speaking of movies in the wild, have you seen the movie, "Backcountry," on Netflix? OMG that scene where the fiancé gets mauled by the bear would surely make you want to stay at home. I was on the edge of my seat the whole time watching the wife narrowly escape being hunted by a bear. I don't think I could run fast enough. I know it's just a movie made for entertainment but there are definitely people with true stories who were just out exploring and never came home or worse came back missing a few limbs. What do you do in instances like this, do you just live in fear and avoid potentially dangerous situations or do you trust that if you've taken precautions everything will be fine? I don't know ya'll I might need to 'rent a husband' for a camping trip one with lumber jack bravado who isn't afraid of the great outdoors lol Seriously, is there such an app? just kidding just kidding :)

Anyway here's my chance, well sort of, Swift Cantrell in Kennesaw, Georgia is hosting a Backyard campout in their park this month on September 15th. You can register for your spot here. The cost is only $25 per campsite and there will be group campfires throughout as individual camp fires are not allowed. I think this would be a really cool experience although there won't be any bears or deer running by the tent, it's a fun excursion to take the kids on to have a family night under the stars. First, we need to buy a tent + some sleeping bags. Here is their list of suggested items to bring.

What to Bring

  • Tent with rainfly

  • Ground cloth or tarp

  • Sleeping bags (or sheets and blankets) and pillows

  • Camping pad, air mattress or extra blankets to sleep on

  • Clothing appropriate for the weather

  • Pajamas, sweats or other sleepwear

  • Personal items (toiletries, prescription medications, etc.)

  • Beverages (drinking water will be available)

  • Flashlight or lantern

  • Bug spray

  • Small trash bag

  • Card games or books (optional)

  • Camera (optional)

What else would you bring for a night under the stars? Let me know if you've ever camped out in the wild.
