#ChasingCoral | Save the Coral Reefs | Motherhood Unplugged

Belize Barrier Reef

I recently watched the documentary, Chasing Coral on Netflix about the unfortunate demise of our coral reef systems due to the rising temperatures of our oceans resulting from Global Warming. During my recent trip to Belize I was able to snorkel the Belizean Barrier Reef and saw so many beautiful corals and sea creatures. I also witnessed some dead corals as well and this truly broke my heart. I was so excited by the opportunity to see life under the ocean with my very own eyes that I took a Scuba class upon my return. I even told my children that when they become of age they can also get certified to scuba dive. The reality is if we don't turn Global Warming around, the reef system may not be here for my children to witness themselves. My son, Phoenix, watched the documentary with me towards the end. He asked me why all the pretty flowers were dying in the ocean. I told him it was the result of Humans being selfish and not caring about the planet. His immediate response was, 'Well that's not good, I want the plants to be pretty again.' If a 6 year old can comprehend the severity of our destruction then we certainly as adults can do what is necessary so they can be pretty again. Below I am sharing some ways you can reduce your carbon imprint and help move the needle in the right direction.

The Great Transformation

Government

See what's going on in your state.Ask your leaders and local government to support clean fuel + clean jobs. Use your voice and vote for CLEAN ENERGY. Make your ask public like they did here

Commit Yourself

Commit to individual action. Research ways to reduce your families carbon imprint and ways to reduce in your community.

Dive and Swim Smart

Coral reefs are effected by the chemicals in our sunscreen. Purchase products that do not contain oxybenzone and wear swimsuits, rash guards, scuba suits that have UV protection to lessen your use of sunscreen in the ocean.

Report Reefs in your Community

If your reefs are experiencing bleaching, document them and report to Chasing Coral

Rally behind the Great Barrier Reef

Call on UNESCO to halt fossil fuel development near the Great Barrier Reef to protect what's left.
