We took a trip to Lima, Peru on Spirit Airlines. As a mom of 2 and traveling with a family of 4, traveling with budget airlines like Spirit is always ideal. I scored a really good deal from Skyscanner for only $300 pp for this trip! I usually pay for myself and the kids to sit together. Since my hubs is over 6 ft he sits in the seats with more legroom if available. Since Spirit is an a la carte airlines you will pay for everything separately including seat selection and baggage fees. If you are a solo traveler this can be the best option, especially if you are budget conscious.

We stayed at the Doubletree in Miraflores, which is located in the business district of Peru. I felt very safe at this hotel especially with the armed guards toting AK's outside of the hotel lobby. I read about the petty theft and robberies in Lima so that was a concern of mine but I did not feel unsafe at all during our trip. I went out on my own without the kids or husband and felt like I was walking through New York City, my hometown. I would not choose this particular hotel again although the rooms were a decent size, they are much smaller than pictured on their website. The room also smelled of mildew due to their rooftop pool as our room was on the ninth floor just two floors below the pool. The kids had fun at the pool and their breakfast was good but we could have had cheaper meals at the local restaurants for breakfast. I also bought food for the room from the local grocery store which was only a few blocks away. There is plenty of public transportation. In fact, you can take a shuttle from Miraflores to the airport for only $8 as opposed to a $40 taxi. We went to the coast on our last day to kill time before our night flight. The kids loved skipping rocks and playing on the beach while watching surfers hang ten.
We ate at local restaurants on the Av. Pardo in Miraflores, drank lots of Pisco sours and had the best lasagna at the beach at La Rosa Nautica. It is a fancy restaurant perched at the end of a pier, crawling with crabs and flocks of birds. We spent most of our time in Miraflores except for our excursion trip to Chilca with Exploor Peru. We went sandboarding with two kids in tow and came back alive! lol Man that was the best leg workout I've had in a long time. We boarded down huge sand dunes and marched back up just to do it again. Our tour guide was amazing and knew the desert like the back of his hand. Sandboarding is so much fun and even more so for little's so go and take the kids with you.
Overall, this family vacation was a success. We will definitely visit Peru again. The food and people are both amazing and we all enjoyed our time there. Peru, you owe us nothing.
