How to pass your VIPKID Demo

Updated: Feb 14, 2019

Congrats! If you're reading this blog post you've probably decided to start the hiring process of VIPKID! That's awesome and doing your research before you hit that record button can make all the difference. Some people have scoured Youtube in search of great 'How to Videos' to pass their demo's and mock class and that's great for visual learners but for those who are readers and note takers this is for you.

Here are the key steps to help you pass your demo class on the 1st try:

1. Read the literature on the portal, Watch EVERY video + Take Notes

Utilize the portal to your advantage and be yourself. Take the notes that suit you best from the videos and develop your own online Teacher personality.

2. SMILE SMILE SMILE You may think that you're smiling but if you record  yourself doing your demo beforehand you can play it back and see what your body language is displaying. This makes ALL THE DIFFERENCE! You will get marked off points if you are not 'enthusiastic enough.' Your cheeks should be hurting at the end because you were smiling so much :)

3. Look the Part

You can buy a $3 orange t-shirt from Michael's. You don't have to wear orange, although that is the company color. If you look presentable and professional you will be more inclined to get a higher pay rate. There is a 'rumor' going around that you have to wear makeup. You don't but just present your best self in front of the the camera, if that means throwing on a little makeup and red lippy then do that. Also the culture in China is conservative so no low cut shirts, tank tops or tight dresses. Be professional.

4. Buy a headset with a microphone.

There are many available online. I purchased mine from Amazon. If you just want to use earbuds with a mic that's fine but it does look better and sound better with the headset mic, so after you've been hired I'd suggest you invest in one.

5. Sell yourself!

Hello, I'm Teacher Rene. I have over 5 years of classroom teaching experience. I also have an TESOL certificate....... etc

Practice your interview skills and sell your credentials.

If you have volunteer experience working with kids talk about that.

6. TPR (Total Physical Response)

Use TPR in your demo to help the non-native English speakers understand what you are trying to say. VIPKID will mark off points if you do not use both Instructional and Educational TPR.

7. NO INCIDENTAL LANGUAGE

When working with beginner letter students cut out all incidental language, it confuses the student and may hinder their progress. Speak slowly and use simple words.

8. USE PROPS.

You can use 'realia', things you already have around your house, make DIY props, flash cards, magnet letters, whiteboards or buy simple and inexpensive items from places like The Dollar Tree and Amazon. VIPKID loves for you to use puppets in your classroom as they are fun and can help engage the student while modeling words.

9. PRACTICE your PERFORMANCE

Here at VIPKID you are an 'EduTainer' and should be ready to turn on the magic when the camera comes on. Use your own children to practice the demo lesson. I practice with my youngest child and he is a great model because he is also learning the English language as he grows. Children will make mistakes or speak in a low voice and you need to be able to adapt and adjust to each child.

10. USE A REFERRING TEACHER

I would LOVE to be your referring teacher and have gone through everything you are about to embark on. I can give your coveted tips and feedback to help you succeed. We can do mock classes on SKYPE so you are more prepared for success. Please use my referral link here

If you have started the application process, you can email teachvip@vipkid.com.cn stating that DOMINIQUE RENE referred you and give them this code: DOMIN051. I really appreciate your support & look forward to hopefully connecting and working with you!

Once you've used my code send me an email to hello@motherhoodunplg.com and I will reach out to you.

Lastly, be CONFIDENT! Act like you already have the job! Show confidence in your teaching skills and do your best!

Good luck,

See you next time.
